Conversions: How to Retain Character with Solid Wood Front Doors

Disused barns and churches provide the ambitious home builder with the opportunity to restore a piece of history and draw out its integral charm. From grand, solid wood front doors to unusual windows and grand spaces, there is something very appealing about converting an old building into a new home.

Home Renovation Award Winners

In 2018, the winner of the Daily Telegraph Homebuilding & Renovation Awards Best Conversion Award went to a stunning and sensitive development of a disused church in Stroud, Gloucestershire.

As with many conversions, the property’s exterior remained largely unchanged. Arched brickwork clearly marked the entrance and stunning double doors clearly express quality craftsmanship. This replica of the original door includes shaped glazed panels and traditional ironwork. It sets the tone for the building.

In contrast to the strong solid wood front door, the rear of the building is fitted with large bifold doors. When opened, these open the interior out into the garden. They provide an almost seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces; a perfect place for entertaining or relaxing.

The 2019 winner is a very different type of conversion. A 1970’s boathouse in Maidenhead has been revamped to suit modern tastes. This also includes sliding rear doors that extend the entire width of the property. Timber cladding and decking have added a softer and more desirable aesthetic to the property.

If you are in the process of renovating a property, could you be on the shortlist for the 2020 Awards?

Bespoke Windows and Doors in Barn and Church Conversions

Designing and building a new property from scratch offers the opportunity to create your ideal home. Having said this, finding land for development in your prime location is far from straightforward.

Creating a home by converting an old building can be the solution and some of us simply can’t get enough of the character that historic construction offers. There are certainly challenges and restrictions, but the key to success is being sympathetic to the original structure. Renovators have to work with the building. The aim is to retain, restore or replicate as much of the detailing as possible. (In the Stroud church, the organ is now an impressive centrepiece in the living room!)

Where can I Buy Made-to-Measure Window and Doors?

In historic buildings, the chances of using standard fittings are limited. Every element needs to be made to fit. This can include bespoke internal doors, replacement wooden windows, staircases and even piece of furniture.

Skilled craftsmen who understand and use traditional techniques, materials and styling are an asset. Their attention to detail and finishing can lead to a successful renovation.

As professional craftsmen, Hinson Custom Made has been involved in the build of bespoke wooden front doors to fit large cart entrances in rural Buckinghamshire barn conversions. We love to showcase our traditional joinery skills when crafting uniquely shaped timber windows or bespoke wooden staircases.

In our North Buckinghamshire workshop, we enjoy replicating the details on wooden arched doors for church restorations. When adding a modern twist, we can provide made-to-measure bifold doors for the rear of a property, which allows light to flood in. Bespoke Front Doors to Gain Approval for Church & Barn Conversions

Getting planning approval for church and barn conversions was made easier in 2018 with changes to permitted development. It is, however, still determined by the ability to prove that the heritage of the building will not be destroyed. Preserving the position, size and finish of windows and doors are vital for retaining the look of the property.

Employing the services of an experienced company such as Hinson Custom Made from the outset can support planning applications. With knowledge of the process and potential stumbling blocks, we can provide information on designs, techniques, materials and finishes to support your application. We even have experience in creating windows and doors for listed buildings.

If given the go-ahead, all of our solid wood front doors, made-to-measure windows and bespoke staircases come with our quality guarantee.

If you would like to discuss your home renovation project with us, we can visit the property, take measurements, offer advice and provide you with a detailed quote.
