Sliding and bi-folding external doors have been a popular architectural feature in recent years. Are we about to see greater demand for made to measure internal doors? With Tokyo 2020 on the horizon, we explore the influence of the East. How will this impact on interior design over the coming year?.
Why are Bi-fold Custom Doors so Popular?
Bi-folding patio doors provide adaptability. On warm summer evenings, the rear boundary of the house can be pushed out of the way. The garden becomes a natural extension of the home. Instantly there is more room to relax, socialise or get active.
Good design gives consideration to the flooring and bi-folding doors. As such, the connection between interior and exterior spaces can be almost seamless. It becomes easy to step outside. You instantly benefit from the natural light, fresh air and the delights of flowering blooms and birdsong.
The opportunity to connect with nature has many positive benefits to our wellbeing, as explained in our Sliding Doors blog.
As the evening draws in, the sliding bi-fold doors can be drawn together, recreating the boundary. The home returns to being snug and cosy. Our families are warm, safe and secure. It is the best of both worlds.
The Trend for Interior Bi-fold Doors
Open plan living has allowed us to optimise internal light and create multi-purpose spaces. It draws people together.
The challenge is that we do not always want all of the family sharing the same space. It can be difficult to finalise that presentation, with conversations going on around you. The washing machine distracts from your enjoyment of a favourite box set.
Internal bi-fold doors offer the solution. A sliding mechanism allows the doors to be open and out of the way when you are enjoying time together. It can be easily drawn closed when private space is desired.
The next thought is where to position the doors. With a bespoke service, you are not restricted to standard door sizes. It is possible to have internal doors to fit any natural divide. What’s more, these made to measure doors fit in perfectly with the latest design trend; Japandi.
What is Japandi?
Japandi follows on from many of the principles that we have embraced with Scandi design, yet with an oriental twist. With Tokyo 2020, expect this trend to make a big impact on interior design.
In Japan, there is an appreciation of craftsmanship and ‘built to last’ quality. Natural materials are favoured, along with clean, simplistic lines.
When it comes to dividing interior spaces, Japanese homes typically include sliding ‘Shoji’ doors in place of solid wood internal doors. The important factor is that the doors or screens can be easily moved to transform interior spaces. It makes the homes more versatile and suited to the current need.
Traditionally, Shoji doors are made from crafted wooden door frames. These are filled with mulberry paper.
For European tastes, the wooden door frames can be fitted with frosted glass. This style of glazed door offers the Japandi style and adaptability. Glazed doors would also offer greater thermal and sound insulation.
From solid wood front doors to bespoke internal doors, Japandi celebrates the natural qualities of the timber. In Japan, interior doors are often untreated; the grain left fully exposed. In contrast, a front door, wooden beams and other exterior timbers are charred. This blackening of the wood enables the natural properties of the timber to provide resilience to fire, insects and weathering.
The desire for wooden doors fits the current move towards sustainable materials. This is becoming a driving force in all types of design.
