Our small team of master craftsmen work with timber every day. We select durable timbers and shape them into made to measure windows and bespoke wooden doors. Working with wood is a sensory experience; it is a tactile material, with unique grains and a wonderful aroma.
Hinson Custom Made is a family business. Knowledge and skills have been passed down through the generations. We apply this expertise when replacing wooden windows or creating grand entrances to new builds with bespoke front doors.
We hope that our love of wood and our joinery skills will be learnt and shared by many generations to come. The need for quality timbers for the present and future is one of the reasons that we support sustainable forest management.
What is Forest Management?
It is no secret that a good variety of tree species are essential to our world. In the past, trees were felled as a primary construction material. There was little awareness of the impact this could have on forest ecosystems and the global environment. At the end of the last century, the damage caused by felling all types of forest was recognised.
Both the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forestry Certification (PEFC) were launched in the 1900s. They aimed to address the alarming rate of indiscriminate forestry logging. Both are internationally recognised schemes which help to maintain and enhance sustainable environmental forestry management.
We ensure that all timber used in our wooden window frames and doors come from approved sources. The timber we source comes from forests with sustainable management systems with FSC or PEFC certification.

What is the difference between FSC and PEFC Certification?
The FSC focused on individual landowners. The PEFC was launched to provide a group certification for regional areas, with a greater uptake in Europe. Both types of forest certification promote management planning and sustainable logging.
Although a vital element in the ecosystem, these schemes are not just about trees. A huge number of plants, insects, birds, animals and people depend on woodland and forests for their survival. It is vital to protect the long-term future of this natural resource.
FSC or PEFC certification is not awarded lightly. There is a rigorous assessment process which involves independent evaluations, public consultation and expert panels. Many different components have to be satisfied before the timber sourced from that forest can bare the FSC or PEFC symbol. The certification has to be renewed every 5 years, so there is no room for complacency.
Sustainable woodland management means that for every tree felled, several saplings are planted. This means timber is a naturally renewable construction material, with every tree helping to capture carbon from the air. A result of sustainable forestry management is the expansion of European forests in recent decades. Rather than being destructive to nature, controlled felling brings environmental benefits.
Creating Wooden Windows from Sustainable Timber
Sourcing FSC or PEFC timbers from our sawmills, ensures we support those owners who are committed to responsible forestry management. The certification process also means that we can trace our timber from its original source, through to our finished products.
With knowledge of timber types, we are aware of which timbers are suitable for specific projects. We typically stick to a tried and tested selection, however some work on heritage and listed buildings demands other species. Our established relationship with the sawmills means that we can diversify when necessary.
Wooden Window Finishes and Installation
We take considerable pride in our work, with all timbers carefully cut to minimise waste. Another aspect of sustainability is crafting quality items that are built to last. We use protective finishes to enhance the natural durability of exterior doors and windows.
All our windows and doors come with our guarantee. They are built with adherence to UK Building Regulations covering security and energy efficiency. Hinson Custom Made is also a member of CERTASS, which simplifies the building certification process.
Our wood front doors and windows are finished with hardware. Letterboxes, handles, door knockers and locks. They are then ready for our professional installation team to fit.
The professional installation of windows and doors is a crucial factor in their energy efficiency. With made-to-measure windows, large gaps are avoided and a good fit is achieved
